Description:
The physical properties of fluids: Continuum hypothesis, surface and body forces, stress, tensor. Introductory thermodynamics. Liquids and gases. Compressibility. Boundary conditions. Dimensional analysis and some important dimensionless parameters. Motion of real fluids, viscosity, fluid statics and applications. Principles of fluid motion: Kinematics of the flow field. Equation of continuity. Euler's equation of motion in inertial and non-inertial reference frames. Bernoulli's equations and applications.

Irrotational flow: Vorticity, circulation and Kelvin's theorem. Velocity potential. Flows defined by elementary velocity, potential functions, application to surface waves.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.
